5 Thoughts Preventing Me From Going On A Diet (and How I Got Rid Of Them)

5 Thoughts Preventing Me From Going On A Diet (and How I Got Rid Of Them)
5 Thoughts Preventing Me From Going On A Diet (and How I Got Rid Of Them)

I have lost the count of times and the kind of diets that I have tried to follow. I could not stick to even a single one of them.
Though these events happened in the past and are no longer repeated.
Today I am updated on the merits of embracing a healthy diet. I have also won over the reasons that prevented me from sticking to them earlier.
Here I list the thoughts that provoked me to avoid going on a diet, and how I found a solution to do otherwise. Read further to know them:

1. I Will Not Be Able To Sustain The Strict Regime
With a new diet schedule, it was usual for me to go gung ho about it in the initial phases. But with time, I could no longer sustain it. That led to giving in to the cravings, which of course were the fat laden ones.
Solution:
The help to fixing the cravings came out pretty simple. I started substituting the fats in the dishes with the extra virgin olive oil. Its addition did not alter the taste, and its monounsaturated fat contributed to health.
2. A Lack Of Motivation
The stuff that got me to diet were events that required getting in shape in a jiffy. They were like a gala date, friend’s engagement or any other immediate short term goal. With the departure of those events, my diet regime also came to a cessation.
Solution:
The fix to above turned out to be an ‘I, Me, Myself’ attitude. I learned to attach my motivation to the long term vision of achieving a healthy lifestyle for my own future.
3. Will Have To Complement With An Exercise Schedule
I enrolled with a local gymnasium to accompany my diet regime . But with my irregular work hours, I failed to attend it on a regular basis. This led my weight to rebound, thereby making me reluctant of being hopeful with any diet.
Solution:
With my physiology, the trouble areas were the tummy fat and arm flabs. After consulting my health practitioner, I learned about stomach crunches and moderate weight lifting. I got regular with them at the comfort of my own home and their positive results were soon evident.

4. It Is Difficult To Handle The Social Pressure
People have subjected me to endless whys, whats, and hows whenever I am on a diet. Not to mention hearing their own experiences which were also uninspiring. All this seeped doubts about my then diet regime.
Solution:
The solution to the bizarre problem of being a center of attraction was in staying aloof during meals. By staying asocial few hours in a day helped me concentrate on myself and my diet regime.
5. The Diet Requires A Lot Of Hard Work
My culinary skills have never been impressive. Moreover, cooking healthy meals always seemed a mammoth task. The thought of coming up with nutritious and low fat meals on a regular basis freaked me out.
Solution:
The fix to the meal planning task was eating fibrous veggies/ lean meats with olive oil. Just a spritz of emulsion combining oil and water on them before throwing them into an oven worked. A dash of seasonings made them interesting to my palate, which led me stick to the healthy diet.

                               -----------------------------------------

Over to you, let me know what you struggled with while dieting. It would be interesting to know your successful journey in overcoming them.

Scented and secretive mission to boost Population control measures

verschiedene Deodorants

There is something that is disturbing me since some time. No, luckily there is not a personal problem, touchwood. Yeah I am worried for my life in a little more particular way than the ordinary general sense, but that could be because of the murder of my father and the events that have been taking place since then, I call them the aftermath of aftermath.

But sorry, this particular post is not on that one. Luckily I have been growing stronger with each passing day.
So, I get on to the issue that has been on my mind for sometime.

It is related to the advertisements that I see these days. If you too have been watching then you would certainly know that there seems to be an overflow of the masculine perfumes, deodorants and talc.
It seems to me as if the Indian health and hygiene sector has just realized that the Indian men are also living beings who perspire and end up being malodorous, resulting into a consciousness that could/does lead  them into shying away from the women folk.

Fine, but what is the need to over-exaggerate? The typical advertisements go beyond to what one would call simply insane. Is it some pheromones that they are actually filled in those aerosol bottles that would just pull the women folk towards the users of those deodorant brands??
Actually yes, one of the advertised brands does boast of some alpha male hormones, but I am yet to test that.

I am intrigued to know where it all started. Because if one analyzes the overall trend, there is not even one, I repeat not even one brand that does not show women getting all ga-ga over a male who uses that particular brand of perfume/deodorant/talc/soap or probably any other product that I am not yet aware of.

But why exactly all this troubles me....? It is because the condoms sale is on decline.

*I did read a news paper report claiming that despite the raunchy advertisements, there is not much positive happening with the sales of condoms. So, that makes me wonder how far will this raunchiness and debauchery indulgence shown in personal hygiene products going to take the sales.

But if really does, I just hope it also leads into a lot of condom sales. Guess that cog wheel theory could work out in this. I mean so what of the explicit advertisements theory could not work for the sales of condoms, but you never know it could work for the sale of deodorants, and probably it could also lead to a proportional amount of sales for the very important health product.

You know you never know.

dont know

Many a times I am asked by people why I eat so much. I know I eat a lot, but what is it exactly that bothers others to see me eating is something I have not been able to decipher. Many a times people who considering my petite frame get bewildered, and end up asking my husband if I really eat a lot all the time. And my dear humble husband comes up with his usual replies to such embarrassing questions saying: Yes, she does eat a lot all the time. Please do not invite us to your place, even informally. Because my wife would definitely turn up at your place.

Though jokes apart, but I still perplex to realize as to why people bother so much about my eating habits. I am a person who just loves to eat, and why not, I do not know how many years I am going to survive more, so each day I spend a sizable amount of time of my life doing the stuff that I really like. And eating happens to be just one of it. I mean food gives me strength, gives me energy, in fact each and every part of my body was once food. If I do not eat, how will I carry my body in a healthy state uptil my old age?? Yeah if ofcourse I live long enough to be really old. Though that is besides the point, but not just me, but every living being on this Earth requires food to survive, and if I listen and act on that instinct, why it seems to bother others?? I just do not know.

I used to get disturbed by those riffs on me and my eating, but now I simply shrug them off.

me hogging on the International Fish n Chips Day
And these days, I have started replying this way instead: "I eat, therefore I am; and therefore my vitality and beauty" and I simply hog off leaving them gaping.

How to get freedom from mouth ulcers

Betel leaves at market in Bangalore
Betel leaves at market in Bangalore (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
It gives me immense pleasure to write this post. I feel so great writing this one up. I do not know if you have read my post that I wrote long back on the sufferings of mouth ulcers. Though it was written sometime in October of the year 2010; but it was even before that time of posting the blog that I was suffering from the recurring mouth ulcers. It was at the time of posting that particular blog post that the pain had gone unbearable. I remember it was a particular bout of ulcers that lasted for about 14 days, and that was the time I was vacationing in Thailand, and most of the part of my holidays was ruined because of them.

Anyway, past is past, now I am proud to state that I am finally relieved of them. I have tried a lot of medication for them. Like chewing raw betel leaves; having a powder made up of powdered crystallized sugar lumps along with cardamoms; Basil seeds; vitamin B complex tablets; vitamin B complex along with vitamin C; regular health supplement pills; homeopathic treatments; ayurvedic treatments; and of course topical anesthetics like  mucopain, zytee, caziq, smyle gel and what not. And yes I also got into the habit of gargling with water which had a disprin dissolved in it!

But except for the ayurvedic treatment, none actually worked in my case. Though the ayurvedic medicines did help in speeding the time taken for the ulcers to cure from a week to 3 days, but still they could not help in their prevention. I got so addicted to them that I would unnecessarily start popping them up before going out for my travels, cause I feared that my journeys would eventually cause an eruption because of altered eating habits which cause altered bowel movements.

But after being addicted to them for a year's time, I felt I had enough of them too. Then I took it as a challenge to eradicate them from my life and get a life in return by searching for a full and final solution for my mouth ulcers.

I kept searching, searching and searching for days in books and the Internet. Finally I found a solution in one of the discussion forums on the Internet and I confirmed the same with a book on Home Remedies from a library.

Firstly I got to understand the entire genesis of the ulcers. I discovered that the mouth ulcers are nothing but a condition of having sores in the mouth, which could be as a sign of infection, which arise either due to body heat or a disturbed gastric condition. Normally they take about a week's time to heal; but a B-complex deficiency causes more time for them to heal. Hence, the solution for them lies in avoiding all the conditions that can be their cause.

Though the reasons seem complicated, but surprisingly the cure turns out to be really simple. Firstly, it asks for keeping one's system clean, which can be done by drinking 1.5 to 2.5 litres of water everyday. Ingestion of water not only exercises the bowels, but also brings down the heat in the body. Both then lead to less occurrence of mouth ulcers. Though keeping one's system clean is more of a prevention step, but for the cure and relief from the pain of existing ulcers one needs to have overnight water soaked whole fenugreek seeds as a first thing in morning. They surprisingly cure the existing ulcers in 2-3 days (the same time my ayurvedic pills took) time. Since fenugreek lowers the LDL (low density lipo protein) or the bad cholesterol, I have stuck to a habit of having it everyday irrespective of being inflamed or not inflamed with ulcers. They seem to form a protective lining on the inflamed sores, hence help in quick healing. Lastly, one needs to keep a good oral hygiene. Since many a times ulcers could be due to some bacterial infection in the teeth or gum, one needs to keep the mouth totally clean. Apart from brushing religiously twice a day; one needs to floss and use a mouth wash too. So now I also use a mouth wash twice a day and floss once a day. Also in humid environments bacteria tend to multiply fast, so the occurrence of mouth ulcers caused due to bacterial infection consequently hastens up. So, during such times I use a mouth wash even before stepping out of my house, apart from using it twice daily.

By just introducing these 3 ridiculously simple changes in my lifestyle I have been freed of the gruesome mouth ulcers that I had for the past 4-5 years. I wish I had known about these everyday miracles earlier, but anyway now since I have put them here, I wish it would be easier for anyone else suffering from the same.

Even if it reaches out to 2 people and they get cured by reading this post, I would be indeed happy.

Things that I just dont get - VI

Almost every other day I come across something or the other that perplexes me to my core. There are many anecdotes that we end up growing up with, which are literally hurled upon us by our parents or our relatives.

One such anecdote I remember about the nice looking mustard seeds. I have always heard that they are good for the health and consuming them gives one nice lustrous black hair, may be that is the reason we have mustard hair oil as well. I remember being advised my paternal grandmother to apply the mustard all the time to get flowing strong hair like the flower of mustard's.

Adhering to that advise, I do apply mustard hair oil on my head, and I do believe that my hair will remain good with its application. But my recent thoughts about the good sounding prophecy of mustard and its oil have altered. The reason for the same is that I saw pictures of my good friend.

This is my friend with me in the pictures below. The first one is about a year ago; and the one below is a recent one. You can see that in the older picture he still had a thick horse shoe structure on his head; but the recent one just has a mark of that horse shoe, well a receding mark.

Well these pictures of him have made me have serious doubts on the potency of mustard seeds. It is because this friend not only applies mustard oil on his head, but also eats food cooked in it as well as has food made in gravy made of mustard seeds.

If a person who has eaten just mustard, mustard and mustard all his life can go bald like this, I wonder what use is of mustard anyway???

I got no answers...

Cycling on Friendship Day

I had seen a post on cycling event being circulated on the eve of friendship day been organised at my city. Just looking at it I had decided to be a part of it. But my decision of attending the event become concrete when the organiser himself called me for the purpose of inviting. Since he happens to be a good friend, I then had to had to go for it.

I prepared for it by setting up 3 alarms on my cellphone. Since I had to report for the event at 7 am, I kept alarms for 5:50 am, 5:30 am and 5:15 am respectively. Luckily I woke up with the last one. The next big task was to wake my husband up, cause his car was parked in front of my cycle in our porch; and due to the contrasting sizes of the porch and his car, it was difficult for me sneak my cycle out without causing scratches to his car. He mumbled in his breath for sometime and then agreed to do the task. It took him just 5 minutes for the maneuver and he rushed back to snooze again.

I then left for my ordeal of the day. I was the first one to reach the venue, and was obviously surprised at that. I thought probably no one turned up for the event as it required a physical task. I therefore then called up my friend who was the organizer. He answered in a voice that was as sleepy as my husband's; I would have gone back home had he not called back saying that he would be there in next 20 minutes. Luckily he came along cycling with a lot of kids, who were also cycling. It was so funny to see few teenage girls getting exhausted from their journey from their home to the meeting venue. They got so exhausted that they ended up walking along with their cycles. This obviously made me wonder how would they cope up with the activity of travelling further, when a mere quarter of the journey tired them so much. They probably knew this that is why they were carrying bottles of Gatorade with them.

Anyway after a wait of about 20 minutes for all the participants to gather, we all finally commenced our actual Cycling. We covered about 5 km of area going from Karelibaug to Kamati garden to Sayaji Gunj and back. In between we took a break to have chai and breakfast of poha. There was a journalist covering the event and we all took pictures. By the way my friend came up with a wonderful idea of celebrating the Friendship day as well. So, all of us tied a friendship band to saplings of Basil as a mark of friendship with the nature. I could have carried my sapling along, but unfortunately my cycle lacks a carrier at the back, and my shoulder tote was not sturdy enough to carry it along. So, I was unfortunate that ways of not carrying a holy plant home. Though I felt lucky that day, cause there was no lecher to invoke me, cause not just I was cycling amongst a big crowd, but also there were cops motorcycling along with us as a part of security measure.

event covered in a local daily, me in the third pic from left
me on the left of the green cyclist

I realized I should not have worn that school T-shirt over my own
All in all I loved waking up early that day; and I came in papers too. Hope those kids would cycle at least once a week from now. It is sad to see school kids obese.

dissolving ingredient for non-seculars

After months of wait, finally yesterday I got to have my tummy full of delights. The whole month of July I was on a diet of rice and curds; all due to my dental surgery. Then came the Ramzan, and I was waiting eagerly for my friends to invite me over for iftari. And I got an invite from one of my good friends for one of my favourite dishes, The HALIM. I just love halim to the core, and my friend makes it just wonderful. We planned last week for a get together at her place for savoring the dish, but sadly her neighbour died of a cardiac arrest on a day before the event. Obviously that caused a lag in the decided event, and the postponement ended yesterday.

I just cannot describe what a lovely time I had eating the slow cooked halim made with mutton, whole wheat and 2-3 whole dals (I do not know their names). Apart from that I also had steamed chicken, chicken rolls and an equally heavy dessert made with layers of fruit cake, fresh fruits, custard, whipped cream topped with jam dressing.

Gorgeous-Halim

Layered-Pudding-with-Jam-dressing
I strongly recommend all the non-secular ones to have such a delicious meal; I am sure they will also start believing in unity in diversity, and the World will become a well fed happy place.

major mousse craving

This love of mine started on the next day of my birthday, 5th of July. I had my first day of the dental surgery that was supposed to be done since eons, and I was postponing it for no particular reason. But since it started on that very day, so I was there with half of my mouth stuck with incisions and stitches.

That very day one of my acquaintances happened to invite me over for a dinner, as a token of birthday gift for me. That was really sweet of her, although I do not like her at all, and also it was a dining invitation which I can never refuse, so with half of my mouth servicing, I went ahead for the invitation.

Because of my impaired eating, I was left with the only option of having pastas, since the food joint happened to be a continental one. I had had 2 pastas, one in red and the other in white gravy, but still they did nothing much to cease my hunger. So, then I moved on to the desserts, and my eyes glanced over that day's special : Mango Mousse. I was just about to order it but my host ranted about the possibility of it being made with eggs. Yeah, since that host was a vegetarian, I was forced to have everything vegetarian, and since I do not like her much, I complied with her non-verbal demands, since I was resisting getting into an argument with her.

Though seeing my irritation, something went over her and she asked one of the waiters to confirm its origins. I was glad when he said that it was vegetarian. Though my happiness reached another height when that lady being skeptical of the waiter and his knowledge refrained from even tasting the dessert. Voila...

I ended up licking up the entire mousse to its last very speck on the bowl in which it was served, and I felt truly blessed. My painful memories of having undergone a dental surgery in the early part of the day had all vanished with the sweet taste of the mousse.

Though the only problem after that was that my love for it transformed into a lust. I could not go to the place again for the same, as that particular mousse was that day's special and was unlikely to be repeated soon. The other food joints that I know of do not serve anything in mousse except for chocolate ones, which I am not particulrly interested in. So, since that day I started my quest for making it at home, I tried all that I could and came up with a fairly simple recipe for it. It is as follows:

1. 350 ml milk
2. 50 g china grass
3. 30 g custard powder
4. 30g sugar
5. 100 g mango pulp

chocolate mousse made in a hurry to accompany this post
Boil the milk and when it starts bubbling, mix in the sugar, custard powder and the china grass. Keep stirring continuously till the mixture becomes thick, it could take about 5 minutes for the mixture to thicken. Then finally add the mango pulp, keep stirring it under the fire for another 2 minutes and then place the mixture into the mousse bowls. Let the mousse stand at room temperature for about 15 minutes, then place the bowl in the refrigerator to set. It should take about 2 hours for it to set well, and then you are done.

Though as a special note remember to melt the china grass in luke warm milk if it is not in a powdered form. Also be sure of the bowls that you use to set the mousse in, cause I broke one of my glass bowl from my dinner set due to the temperature difference issues. Also, you can use any other fruit instead of mango, or you can use a tablespoon of cocoa powder or even make the mousse without any flavour.

Thanks to this simple recipe I am enjoying my favourite dessert at the comfort of my home and not with people with whom I am forced to socialize....

P. S: Guys do not miss out the dramatic caramalization ....lol

akhri pasta

I have never been fond of any food other than true Indian. Sophisticated places and words like Aubergine, Cilantro, Bruschetta, Khao Suey, Foie gras and Sushi make me uncomfortable. That is the reason why I decline fancy dinner invitations from my very well off acquaintances. I end up wasting my time and appetite both at the same time, also to be considered is the fact that I have to keep my mouth shut. Of course, I can’t admit on their faces that I detested every part of the soiree, including them. I am very blessed spending time having delicious mouth watering meals at highway dhabas that serve ghee laden maa ki dal, cheese naans, hot red tandoori chicken and mesmerizing aromatic zeera rice.

Luckily, my better half, who although is entirely a different person from me, shares exactly the same taste buds as mine. We both love to spend winters relishing on mooli parathas, sarso ka saag with white butter smeared makki ki roti; and piping hot gajjar ka halwa with pure desi ghee oozing out of it.

All was cordial in our foodie paradise till my mother-in-law developed a taste for Italian delicacies after returning from her US trip. She knew that her desi bahu has no inclination towards good non-Indian food, she therefore carried dabbas and dabbas of Rice-A-Roni pasta along with her on her way home. It was convenient for me too, I just had to pour all the stuff together in boiling milk and within few minutes her meal was ready. Then I and my husband could elude in for our road side indulgences.

But one day my compulsive reading habits caught me into a big-big trouble. I ended up reading that all the pasta and noodles has egg as a basic ingredient. My mother-in-law has done the amrit-shaka thingy from the Golden temple, eating any meat and egg is forbidden for her. Indeed ignorance is bliss; I had to confirm if the imported pasta that she got from the U.S had any eggs as an ingredient. I dreaded to do it, what if it really had. And it had....and then I thought my entire life came to an end. I updated my husband on this, and he received the entire wrath from her. She would have gone on and on with her Punjabi abuses, but luckily my husband called up my sister-in-law and was successful in putting on the the entire blame on her. And my mother-in-law shifted her abusing activity on her. We were saved, and then it was declared that my sister-in-law was the real culprit of scathing her mother's religious vows. Technically speaking, she was, as she only got my mother-in-law into eating pastas.

Well then, all the left over pasta boxes were given off as gifts to our Indian firangi friends, but the real problem was finding a replacement for the ready-made pastas, that was truly vegetarian. We started taking her out to Little Italy once in a month. She liked the place and the food and the fact that they serve truly vegetarian meals. But that activity forced both of us into eating a meal there as well. Well, nothing except a Caesar salad fascinated my palate, and poor husband just bit into the left over pasta from his mom. This activity got into our nerves, and then I heard of Maggi Sooji pasta. It seemed like a freedom from our monthly drudgery; also since it was highlighted in its advertisement that being made from sooji, it is a healthy alternative to usual pasta. It being healthy, vegetarian and so convenient to prepare gave both of us a reason to be happy.
But little did we know then that our Italian problems were still not resolved. My mom-in-law just did not like its taste, and she told me not to prepare it ever again. Since I do not taste pastas, I just could not make out what was wrong with the Maggi pasta. So, my reading started again, this time to learn making home-made pasta. I did a lot of research from all over, and finally learnt to make one at home. Now, I not only make wonderful pastas, but I and my husband have also started eating them. When something is achieved by hard labour and sweat, one is bound to love it. And above all my mother-in-law also loves them and we all eat pasta together as a happy family meal time.

Few pasta facts that I have figured out myself:

1. Semolina/Sooji is an important ingredient in pasta noodles in Italy and World over. So, Nestle guys have not done an innovation by making Maggi Sooji pasta.
2. There is hardly any difference in the nutrient content of whole wheat pasta and usual maida/all purpose flour pasta. It is because the whole wheat pasta will be incorporated with a lot of gluten to come up with the pasta like consistency, which automatically harms the nutrient content. Whereas, the pasta with maida will not require a lot of gluten, as it already has a sizable amount of gluten in it.
3. Any one can make flat pasta noodles at home, though the angel hair pasta noodles cannot be made without the proper machinery.
4. One can make hand-pulled angel hair pasta noodles at home without the machinery, but that will take loads and loads of practice and technique, which will take long to achieve.
5. Finally my tried and tested vegan recipe for making pasta noodles:
  • mix 1 part of semolina and 1 part of maida together
  • add 1 tsp of salt and a teaspoon of olive or any other oil to the flour mixture
  • knead the flour mixture with 2 parts of water
  • keep on kneading a lot and incorporate all the water slowly in batches
  • at one point of kneading the flour might stick all over your hands and on the surface, do not fret, just curse me and keep on kneading with vigorous strokes till the dough is done
  • then let the dough rest for minimum 1 hour wrapped in a cloth
  • flatten it and cut it into desired shapes
  • boil it in water which has 1 tsp of oil in it
  • after 2 -3 minutes of boiling, the pasta noodles will float on the top, giving a cue that they are done
  • drain them and cook in your favorite pasta sauce

Mail me if you need the sauce recipe too, I believe you are smarter than me in making it yourself. I learned all this just recently.

Buon appetito!!
